The 2003 Walter Hälg Prize

Roger A. Cowley - University of Oxford, UK

The third award of the prize (10’000 CHF) was presented at a special ceremony and session at the 3rd European Conference on Neutron Scattering (ECNS 2003), 3-6 September 2003, Montpellier, France.

Professor Roger A. Cowley is the recipient of the 2003 Hälg Prize. The reason for this election is his impressive series of firsts in experiments with neutrons and X-ray, and in theory.

1960- Physics -Cambridge University U.K.
1963- Ph.D. performed with B.N.Brockhouse.
1964-Research officer at AECL, Canada.
1970- Professor of Physics-Edimburg University.

Roger Cowley has an impressive series of firsts in experiments with neutrons and X-rays and in theory. The range is enormous: ferroelectricity, phase transitions, magnetic excitations, liquid helium, nanostructured layers, quantum spin systems, and quantum entanglement. He has an unrivalled ability to select key materials in which to demonstrate a new principle or phenomenon both experimentally and theoretically. An amazing productivity and the training of very large number of students are a hallmark of his career. Students and professors turn to him for advice, and he is internationally in demand for his insight.
