Who is Jeffrey Penfold?

Back to Who is who in neutrons a biographical directory with data on "neutron people": (Walter Hälg, Furrer, Mutka ...)

Dr. Jeffrey Penfold
Where are you from?
Originally from the South of England, not far from the laboratory
Some personal data... your hobbies?
With a relatively young family and a job which is really a hobby there has been little time for much else. However, I have recently resurrected my interest in painting (watercolours), as before starting a career in science I had intended to go to art school.

Post-graduate Studies and Degrees
Jeffrey Penfold studied at Brunel University, UK where he obtained the degree of Bachelor in Technology in 1971 and the Ph.D. degree in 1981 with a thesis entitled “New applications of neutron scattering to problems in surface chemistry”.

Working at
In 1971 he was appointed Scientific Officer in the Neutron Beam Research Unit at the Rutherford Laboratory.
From 1977 to 1979 he was seconded to the Institut Laue-Langevin, Grenoble.
From 1980 to 2003 he was Group Leader for Large Scale Structures at ISIS, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory
Since 1981 Group Leader for non-crystalline diffraction at the same institute.
Since 1992 he has been a Research fellow at RAL, and since 2005 a Senior Research Fellow, where his remit has been to persue his own research programme in colloids and interfaces, using primarily neutron scattering techniques.
Since 2001 he has also been the Project Scientist for the TS-2 project at ISIS.

Visiting Professor
In 2000 he was appointed Visiting Industrial Professorat University of Bristol, UK, and since 2002 he has been Visiting Professor in Physical and Theoretical Chemistry at Oxford University, UK.

Publishing papers
I have (over the length of my career) published 351 papers so far, 167 in that last 10 years, and 69 in the last 5 years. I see publishing ones work as an important marker. Some recent papers / reviews that summarise the breadth of my work are:

J Penfold et al, COCIS 11 (2007) 337
