Post-graduate Studies and Degrees
Kell Mortensen received his PhD degree in physics/engineering from the Technical University of Denmark. He was rewarded the TJ Watson fellowship for works at the IBM research centre in New York, and received later the National Science Foundation Senior Fellowship.

Working at Risų National Laboratory
Kell Mortensen has been at Risų National Laboratory since 1983, where he was responsible for the construction and use of the Risų-SANS facility. This instrument has since 2001 been installed at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland. Kell Mortensen is heading the Polymer Science Programat the Danish Polymer Centre Risų. |

Chairman of the Danish Neutron Scattering Society
Kell Mortensen represents the neutron users in Denmark.
Board member of DanScatt, which is an instrument center with the aim to support Danish scientists and students performing neutron scattering research. Funding are provided for travelling expenses connected to neutron experiments and conferences, and specialized materials costs connected to neutron experiments.

Vice-chairman of the European Spallation Source Scandinavia
The ESS Scandinavia Consortium (ESS-S) presented an Expression of Interest to host an ESS facilty in Lund. It is formed by scientists with support from the Swedish Research Council and the Norwegian Research Council, the major universities in Scandinavia, a number of laboratories and institutes, and regional political and business related organisations. |

Member of the board of the Danish National Science Foundation
The aim of the Foundation is to identify and support groups of scientists who, based on international evaluation, are able to create innovative and creative research environments of the highest international quality. A Board of Trustees with nine members is responsible for the Foundation. Kell Mortensen is one of this nine, nominated by the Joint Committee of Directors at the Governmental Research Institutes.

Working for the ESS project
Kell Mortensen was member of the ESS Instrumentation Task Group, working to consider the general advantages and disadvantages of SANS (Small-Angle Neutron Spectrometer) on the ESS as compared to the best available elsewhere for the ESS target stations. He was moreover member of the Scientific Advisory Groups on Soft Condensed Matter and on Nanotechnologies |

Advising to the Swiss neutron source: member of the Scientific Committee of SINQ
Kell Mortensen is one of the 10 external international experts in the field of neutron scattering componing the Scientific Committee of SINQ. The commitee gathers twice a year to discuss strategic items concerning SINQ and its instrumentation and also to review the submitted proposals. It then makes recommendations to the PSI directorate. Usually the committee members are exchanged in rotation every third year. |
