ESS Scandinavia
Since 2000, ESS Scandinavia is working for the European Spallation Source to be built in Lund in southern Scandinavia, next to the fourth generation synchrotron MAX IV. The Swedish government has offered 30 % of the construction cost and 10 % of the operational costs. Right now, negotiations with other European governments are taking place. Professor Colin Carlie is the Director of ESS Scandinavia.

ESS-Bilbao Initiative
The Spanish candidature to host the ESS. The governments of Spain and the Basque Country have expressed their public undertaking to give their decided support to the installation of the ESS in Bilbao. The ESS-Bilbao Consortium will pay from its own resources the 30 % of the total cost of the ESS and will keep the 15 % of the rights. Those countries that wish to have a share of the property of the ESS, and hold it from the first moment, will agree its time profile of payments with ESS-Bilbao. Then the ESS-Bilbao Consortium, throught the "Spanish National Science and Technology Fund", will suply the funds required to adapt the money inputs generated by the annual contributions of the participating countries to the money outputs required by the ESS construction.

Hungary for ESS On behalf of the Hungarian Government the Ministry of Economy and Transport is promoting the project to host ESS as a pan-European large scale facility with a special attempt to improve the geographic balance of research infrastructures for the eastern part of Europe. Ferenc Mezei is acting as chief expert negotiator for the Hungarian project. The project management is provided by the "ESS Hungary Company".
