The Central Project Team was to concentrate on:
1. Being overall responsible for the project progress - make sure all important aspects were covered. Follow the development on similar initiatives elsewhere.
2. Increasing the visibility of the project among, scientists, decision-makers, politicians etc.
3. Providing the link/coordination between the three technical themes - accelerators, target systems and instrumentation, which were led by three de-localised task leaders and their deputies.
4. Site candidates liaison – support candidate ESS sites in hosting the ESS facility
