What ESS can do
New science and technology at ESS will become possible in three major directions:

  1. We will be able to observe real materials under real conditions in real time like the fatigue of an engineering material or the lubrication layer in a running engine and the behaviour of the additives in it.

  2. We will be able to observe minute samples. This could be key components in a formulation for instance polymeric additives for tertiary oil recovery or very small samples in biology where the limit will go down from 100 mg to 1 mg causing a revolution for neutron science in biology.

  3. ESS will provide very high resolution and sensitivity in space and time allowing to follow for instance the motion of synthetic and biological macromolecules and to relate motion and function.
