Europe was involved - and Europe can still do it !

Europe has the competence and capability to build a world leading facility.

The ESS partners, some 20 laboratories, universities and research organizations, not to forget the user community: many scientists from all over Europe that had joined together to elaborate the science case and the technical design, and to work on the planning and the realization of this enormous project. The ESS case had become a promising project and five contenders had expressed their interest to host the ESS.

  • The directors of the participating institutes formed the ESS Council.
  • The Science Advisory Committee of the ESS represented the best neutron scientists from Europe, and the US and Japanese partners in the MW spallation endeavour.
  • A Technical Advisory Committee comprising experts from a large number of major facilities all over the world, had expressed its vote of confidence in the ability of the ESS partners to build it according to plan.
  • A Central Project Team, located in Jülich, Germany, formed the core of the project, coordinating the diverse activities and centralizing the ESS administration.
