4th Central European Training School on Neutron Scattering
Budapest Neutron Center, 23 - 28 April 2007

The school entitled 4th Central European Training School on Neutron Scattering is now a regular event at BNC including hands-on-training at the Budapest Research Reactor facilities. This training opportunity is offered to the European community with special emphasis on the Central European region. The scope of the school is to provide an overview of the neutron sources, to give an introduction to the theoretical basics of the neutron scattering and to demonstrate to the students the art of utilisation of instruments at a large-scale facility. We consider that the most important aim of organizing training in neutron scattering is to show in practice to the participants the main aspects of performing real neutron scattering measurements. Special attention will be devoted to the application of the neutron scattering in different fields of the research: fields of physics, polymer science, condensed matter, material science, medical science, pharmaceutical industry, archeometry.

The training consists of 6 days lectures and experimental works (introductory lectures in the morning followed by the laboratory practical work and processing and evaluation of the obtained experimental data). The hands-on training foreseen for each student, includes a few hours experimental work for each spectrometer of the training programme, and learning in practice about the primary data treatment as well as a general tour of the reactor and its facilities. The participants will be divided into 6 groups. Each group of 5 students will perform one or two neutron scattering experiments per day and each group will work at 5 or 6 different instruments. The measured experimental data will be analysed by the students assisted by the scientist responsible for the instrument. Experiments on the following machines are foreseen: Small angle scattering instrument Three-axis spectrometer Reflectometer Prompt-gamma activation analysis Time-of-flight spectrometer Data treatment and visualisation Neutron holography station Neutron radiography station A poster session is also organised, giving an opportunity of presenting actual research area to the participants. This allows them to have discussions with the instrument responsibles about their individual research problems and about possibilities of finding ways - with the aid of these techniques - to get closer to the key of a given problem.
