November 2003 The role of ESFRI and the new perspectives to support the construction and access of research infrastructures discussed in Trieste, Italy, at the conference INFRA/ERA 2003 (13.11.03) INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON RESEARCH INFRASTRUCTURES: CENTRES OF EXCHANGE, TRAINING AND EXCELLENCE FOR THE EUROPEAN RESEARCH AREA. The objective of the INFRA-ERA 2003 conference is to assess the present and future role of the research infrastructures in the construction of the European research area, and to further a common EU and member states policy in their support, as initiated by the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures, ESFRI. Organized by the Italian government, as one of the main events during its semester of presidency, in collaboration with ESFRI. Local organization, Sincrotone Trieste in collaboration with AREA Science Park.

November 2003 Interesting article published in Physics Today - November 2003 Neutron Diffraction Overcomes Flux Limits to Resolve a Large Protein Structure. To demonstrate the effectiveness of neutron diffraction in biology, crystallographers bring neutrons to bear on an important industrial enzyme. October 2003 Neutron researchers' attention focused on Japan: The international symposium on pulsed neutron science and instruments IPN2003 took place inTsukuba from 27-30 Oct. 2003IPN2003 - An international symposium to discuss science and instruments using pulsed neutrons. The symposium programme included a plenary session, oral sessions, poster session, instrument workshops to discuss instruments in new sources, especially on JSNS instruments, and informal working sessions to discuss world wide collaboration in computing, detector, optics, etc. The symposium has been closed in the J-PARC site with a summary of the workshops and the working sessions. A satellite workshop (UKJ2003) on the UK-Japan collaboration, which has led to the development of innovative instruments (i.e. MARI and MAPS in ISIS ), followed the symposium.

15/10/03 Former ESS Chairman Peter Tindemans hopes that at the ESFRI meeting INFRA/ERA 2003 the time schedule and a request to the European Science Foundation to organise a European review of the plan for a next generation source will be discussed.
Former ESS Chairman Peter Tindemans hopes that at the ESFRI meeting INFRA/ERA 2003on 19 Nov. the ESS plan will be revisited, and the time schedule and a request to the European Science Foundation to organise a European review of the plan for a next generation source will be discussed. The time schedule he presented at the 3rd European Conference on Neutron Scattering- ECNS in Montpellier early September, will first lead to agreement which source would be best given a further updated science case and the delays now incurred, and then to a construction decision end 2007.
See the presentation "The ESS Project after the recent political decisions "- ECNS Montpellier,
Peter Tindemans, former chairman ESS COUNCIL . (Section ESS/Project Status)

13 October 2003 Neutron researchers as final winners of the annual prize in High Energy Particle Physics. Measuring neutrons properties!
Researching on symmetry breaking forces between subatomic particles!
Prof. Mike Pendlebury (Sussex university) and Prof. Keith Greene (Sussex university/Rutherford Appleton Laboratory) jointly are the final winners of the Institute of Physics Energy Particle Physics group prize for 2003.
For their organisational and intellectual leadership, over many years, of the pioneering experiment at ILL Grenoble to measure the electric dipole moment of the neutron. Their latest world-leading published result (showing that, with 90% confidence, it is less than 6.3 10 -26 e-cm) imposes a very significant constraint on theories of CP violation. Their new technique, recently approved for funding, promises an increase of sensitivity of another two orders of magnitude.
Nominated by: Bob Brown, George Kalmus, Peter Norton and Ken Peach

September 2003 The 3rd European Conference on Neutron Scattering was successfully held in Montpellier, France, from 3 to 6 September, 2003. The conference, held in Montpellier and organised by the European Neutron Scattering Association, attracted over 615 participants from 30 countries demonstrating again the relevance of the neutron community.

During the conference, 82 oral papers including 9 invited plenary lectures and 16 invited speakers, were presented and discussed. In parallel, an exhibition took place where main neutron facilities and instruments manufacturers were on display. Space was also available to accommodate more than 630 posters, providing a forum for scientific discussion on the broad neutron research fields. The opening ceremony included the presentation of the 2003 Walter Hälg Prize. The conference ended with the proclamation of the Young Scientist awards.
The overall structure of the conference, the programme, and the abstracts are shown in the ECNS Website.

24/09/03 European portal for neutron scattering and muon spectroscopy RUNNING! A portal designed as an entry point to available resources for those working in neutrons and muons.

The “European portal for neutron scattering and muon spectroscopy” is a common entry point to facilities and information. It is a joint initiative by all European organisations engaged in neutrons and muons, and is supported by the European Commission through FP5 and FP6.
We are still working on it!

August 2003 R.A Cowley winner of the 2003 Walter Hälg PrizeIn its press release of 11 August 2003, the European Neutron Scattering Association announced the winner of the 2003 Walter Hälg Prize. R A. Cowley, an innovator in neutron experiments based actually in Oxford University, was named as the winner and recipient of the 10.000 Swiss francs (prize money). The International Award Selection Committee, a panel of authorities of the major scientific disciplines within the field of neutron scattering, based its decision on Professor Cowley's impressive series of firsts in experiments with neutrons and X-ray and in theory. The award ceremony took place on 2 September as part of the “3rd European Conference on Neutron Scattering” in Montpellier. Fabricio Barocchi, the ENSA chairman, and Walter Hälg congratulated the winner and handed the prize to him. The ceremony ended with a talk by R.A. Cowley.
