Focusing neutrons by means of converging guides:
Peter Böni, JRA3, Neutron Optics
Doubly tapered glass channels coated with supermirror focus the beam to a small spot thus increasing the neutron flux at the sample position. The supermirror is composed of an interference coating of 360 layers Nickel/Titanium ranging in thickness from 45 Å – 700 Å.

The performance of the focusing unit is simulated by means of Monte-Carlo simulations (McStas from Risø National Laboratory). The calculations demonstrate an intensity gain of approximately a factor of 3.5.
