RICH - Research Infrastructures for Cultural Heritage.
12-13 December 2005, Trieste

The meeting took place at the
Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, Italy
Adriatico Building -Kastler Hall

Scope
The workshop and the foresight study, organized by European scientific institutions with affiliations to advanced lasers, neutrons and synchrotron radiation research centres, was aimed at bridging the current knowledge gap between Research Infrastructures (RI) and the Cultural Heritage (CH) community, by bringing together RI scientist, current and future RI users in the field of CH, and a panel of leading CH experts.

The Workshop
The interdisciplinary workshop consisted of scientific sessions, including invited and contributed talks, as well as a poster session, focused on recent advances of Cultural Heritage research with neutrons, synchrotron X-rays and lasers.
A plenary session with Cultural Heritage experts addressed future perspectives of large scale facilties in Cultural Heritage.

The Foresight Study
This study identifyed how present and future needs in the field of conservation and investigations of objects of historic and cultural significance can be best met by Research Infrastructure research and instrumentation. The findings will help research Infrastructures to further adapt neutron, synchrotron and laser radiation facilities to the requirements of a wider community in cultural heritage research.

Cultural Heritage and Development
Cultural heritage is of paramount importance for developing country societies and economies. ICTP, under the aegis of UNESCO and IAEA, promotes the use of advanced methodologies based on tools developed for fundamental physics research in cultural heritage applications. In particular there are specific areas that require urgent attention, such protecting and/or restoring cultural heritage sites from natural and man-made disasters (climate change, earthquakes, air pollution, etc) and illegal trade in counterfeit art. The Centre may also promote the access to large scale research facilities by researchers and students from developing countries.

Objectives
To provide a vibrant and interdisciplinary forum to discuss recent scientific results and techniques employing neutrons, synchrotron X-rays and lasers in Cultural Heritage research.

To map the community involved in activities related to Cultural Heritage research at advanced radiation sources.

To bridge the current knowledge gap and improve synergies between art historians, conservation scientists and natural scientists.

To encourage cross-fertilization between the CH community and RI researchers.

To identify the scientific needs of the CH community, i.e networking, coordination, physical infrastructures, virtual infrastructures etc.

To identify the technical requirements of future instrumentation best suited to investigate CH objects.

Preliminary Study Meeting
In preparation of the RICH workshop of December 2005, a preliminary study meeting was held on October 5, 2005 in Palazzo Sturzo, Rome , where working groups of invited experts in the fields of "Cultural Heritage" and "Research Infrastructures" contributed to shape the structure and the contents of the December Meeting.
