Information about Bilbao and the Euskalduna Center: (PDF, 1.486 MB)
Bilbao is the core of a metropolitan area with more than one million inhabitants. Since its foundation, more than 700 years ago, it has been the fundamental factor and the main socio-economic axis around which the Vizcaya (Bizkaia) region has set its modernisation process in motion.
There is a lot to see in Bilbao: the Old Town, the grand buildings of the Ensanche district, the new Bilbao with its flagship the Guggenheim Museum and numerous other buildings by top architects.
There are waterfront promenades along the river, several museums to visit, and many bars where you can sample the traditional snacks known locally as “pintxos”.
Outside the city itself, you can take the Metro to the beach, visit Getxo with its stately homes and old fishing port and cross the river to Portugalete on the Puente Bizkaia transporter bridge. This bridge has recently been declared a human heritage site, and the views of the bay from the walkway along its top are magnificent.
Just a few kilometres along the coast are the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve and the town of Gernika, and inland lie the spectacular hills of the Duranguesado.
You may also wish to visit Donostia-San Sebastián or the Rioja Alavesa wine growing area, where many wineries are open to visitors. All this is just 1 hour from the centre of Bilbao.
