Who is Albert Furrer?
If you look for "ALBERT FURRER" in one of the most popular web search machines, you will get more than 559 entries! Beside his name you always will find words like: Neutron Scattering, Condensed Matter, Materials Research, Physics, Superconductivity, Magnetism, Summer School on Neutron Scattering - Zuoz,... and the names of the people being going with him along his professional career.
But what you realize at a glance is that Prof. Albert Furrer is an eminent European neutron scatterer. Here we highlight the more relevant facts we have found online:

Professor: Head of The Laboratory for Neutron Scattering (LNS) (1984) - Physics Department, ETH Zurich , Switzerland / SINQ, Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI)
While sitting in my office and reflecting about the work achieved in the past year, I occasionally look out of my window and see snowflakes falling down slowly and silently and finally coating the green meadows with a white cover

Info about this book |
Author Albert Furrer: you can find a list of books about neutron scattering written by Albert Furrer. Seven titles appear on one of the most famous Book Webpages: Frontiers of Neutron Scattering, Neutron Scattering in Condensed Matter Physics, Neutron Scattering from Hydrogen in Materials, Neutron Scattering in Novel Materials, Neutron Scattering in Layered Copper-Oxide Superconductors, Magnetic Neutron Scattering, Complementarity Between Neutron and Synchrotron X-Ray Scattering (World Scientific Publishing Company)
In the meantime, Albert Furrer´s author and co-author record is approaching 400 scientific papers |
MaNEP Web page |
Professor Furrer, the leader of the project Neutron Scattering in Cuprates and quantum Spin Systems of the MaNEP, an acronym for Materials with Novel Electronic Properties - National Centres of Competence in Research (NCCR) of the Swiss National Science Foundation. MaNEP is a long term research programme which gathers 250 scientists from Swiss universities and industry to study new electronic materials which are at the forefront of our future technological environment |
ENSA Web page |
Chairman of the European Neutron Scattering Association
The European Neutron Scattering Association, ENSA, is an affiliation of national neutron scattering societies and committees which directly represent neutron beam users. ENSA was inaugurated in 1994 under the chairmanship of Professor Richter. When ENSA was funded, Professor Furrer was Vice-Chairman until 1997. From 1997-1999 he was the ENSA Chairman, finishing the ENSA survey of European neutron scattering Survey of the Neutron Scattering Community and Facilities in Europe |

Chairman of the International Scientific Council of the spallation neutron source project AUSTRON
By the end of December 1992, Dr E Busek, then Minister for Science and Research, had officially declared the support of the Austrian Government for the AUSTRON . The International Scientific Advisory Board was founded in 1993 and is chaired by Albert Furrer, PSI and ETH Zurich

Chairman of the Scientific Council of the HMI: Since 2001 Professor Furrer is the Chairman of the Scientific Council of the HMI (Hahn-Meitner-Institut Berlin) with its very efficient neutron user program BENSC. The Berlin Neutron Scattering Center (BENSC) at the upgraded research reactor BER II is Germany's most modern facility for cold and thermal neutron scattering research, internationally open to users. |
SINQ Web page |
Scientific programme head at PSI: 17 January 1997 - Today, the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) in Villigen, Switzerland, formally inaugurates a $65 million neutron source that will help close one gap and bridge another. The first is the gap between supply and demand, as researchers clamor for access to neutron beams for research ranging from materials science to probing biological compounds. The new facility, called SINQ, will make a modest contribution toward solving that problem...SINQ will be comparable to the world's best source of cold neutrons at ILL [the Institut Laue-Langevin] at Grenoble," says Albert Furrer, scientific programme head at PSI

Info about the ICNS |
Member of the International Advisory Committee: Professor Albert Furrer has been member or chariman of the Advisory Commitee of a long list of international neutron conferences. He has initiated the ECNS series (European Conference on Neutron Scattering) with ECNS'96 at Interlaken, Switzerland, with a record number of 700 participants, followed by ECNS'99 in Budapest, ECNS'03 in Montpellier and ECNS'07 in Malmö
At present, he is one of the members of the International Advisory Committee of the next International Conference on Neutron Scattering to be held from 27 November to 2 December 2005 in Sydney, Australia |
