Networking Activities

Networking activities will involve all participants, together with other organizations and individual users. The aim is wide exchange of ideas, results and information (there will only be IP restrictions in a very few cases where there are possible commercial considerations). As far as is possible, we will arrange joint meetings of the different activities (Networking Activity N2). All participants should therefore have the opportunity to learn about, and hence benefit from, most developments.

The NMI3 will employ an Information Services Manager (Networking Activity N3) who will run a central web site giving comprehensive information on all aspects of neutron scattering and muon spectroscopy in Europe. This person will also be responsible for Public Understanding of Science activities to spread this information to the general public.

There will be several types of training activity. Training of new users, particularly those from ‘complementary techniques’, increases and spreads the user community. Exchange of technical staff will enable them to learn new skills. Priority for training will be given to those from countries with small facilities, or with no strong tradition of neutron scattering or muon spectroscopy.

Foresight studies will examine the role of these techniques in the evolving scientific and social landscape, providing recommendations for future opportunities and developments.

In several of the activities NMI3 also makes the connection to other I3. One of the Joint Research Activities is a collaboration with the I3 for Nuclear Magnetic Resonance. As part of the NMI3 Networking Activities we also propose to explore the possibilities for synergy with other I3, in particular NMR, synchrotrons and lasers.
